Lianne Blakely, the illegitimate daughter of a powerful Hong Kong trader and his American mistress, has spent years studying the art of ancient jade, hoping to win the approval of her Chinese family. A brilliant gemologist, she has gained employment in the Tang family business, if not acceptance in the family. Now the Jade Emperor, one of China's legendary cultural treasures, has been stolen and Lianne is accused of the theft.

At first suspicious of the bright, ambitious family outcast, Kyle finds himself reluctantly believing her fierce claim of innocence and irresistibly drawn to her exotic beauty. Soon they have joined forces to find the real thief -- a venture that draws them into the perils of spiraling international power plays, and the discovery that their mutual love for an exquisite gemstone has linked them in an alliance as enduring as the beauty of the ancient jade.

Like "Amber Beach", you learn a lot about jade in reading this book. Also like AB, there's maybe a little too much of the book. I kept finding myself wishing the story would move along instead of having to skim through another several pages of the Heroine's angst about her father's family and their refusal to acknowledge her.

But if you don't mind skimming through this sort of stuff, it's a good story.

Second novel of the Donovan series and a great one! For those of us who LOVE romance but are looking for a real story too...it's a shame there are only 4 of these in the series!

My favorite book out of all of Elizabeth Lowell's books. Lianne and Kyle and witty and fun and I love them. I love the other characters as well, but these two are my favorite.

Features the internationally renowned Donovan family pairs youngest brother Kyle, who featured prominently in the previous book Amber Beach, with the illegitimate daughter of a Chinese trading dynasty. Lianne Blakely accepts that she'll never be openly acknowledged as Johnny Tang's daughter, but her expertise in handling the family's extensive jade collection has earned their respect and leads to her realization that someone has substituted inferior replicas for several priceless pieces. Kyle, meanwhile, has been ordered by big brother Archer to investigate Lianne's possible involvement in the sale of jade treasures that may have been stolen from China. With international relations and leadership within the Tang family at stake, Lianne joins Kyle's effort to find the thief and elude some nasty characters, despite the equally dangerous, explosive passion the couple shares. Hot love scenes, relentless suspense, and appearances by the noisy and affectionate Donovan clan keep the reader entertained.

Not her best, but still a good read.

I'm truly impressed with this author's excellent track record of taking a romantic (or in this case steamy sex) mystery and wrapping it genuine scholarly research on a particular subject of art or culture. The subject here is, obviously, jade. And when the main characters aren't examining each other's naked bodies, they are examining, discussing, and educating about priceless antique jade artifacts as well traditional Chinese culture. Her books could be just unusually well-written romances but she raises them up to a much higher level with intriguing subjects I didn't even know I was interested in. To my mind, Ms. Lowell has earned the fortune she's made from her writing by appealing to a broad spectrum of the reading public.
