This is an adventure story with themes of greed, mutual dependence and family. Jacob joins his father who is in Brazil, where he is working to create a jaguar preserve. There is danger though as some people are trying to stop them. Jacob learns firsthand how people are harming the fragile environment in Brazil jungles.

Main character is 14 years old, does some things that most kids don't do, like stalk deer, live at a nursing home, fly to Brazil alone.
