The freedom of the range, the bawling of the longhorns, the lonesome night watch beneath a vast, starry sky--they got into a man's blood until he knew there was nothing better than the life of a cowboy--except the love of a good woman.

This is book 2 in the Cowboy series.
Devestated by a ruthless betrayal, disillusioned by the War Between the States, Ward Dillon swore he'd escape his bitter past and start anew-even if he had to abandon his heart's desire. So the San Antonio doctor traded his medical practice for the rugged life of the open trail, refined society for the company of rough-and-ready cowpokes. Yet what hope, what harmony, what happiness could be his without the women he'd left behind, the beauty who haunted his dreams? And when Marina tracked Ward down on the windswept Texas plains, how could he resist the burning brand of passion that had once brought them searing extasy and promised the only pease possible for his embattled heart?

2nd Book in "The Cowboys" series by Leigh Greenwood. Good, typical western. Great continuity with characters from the first book, allowing you to follow the tales into this one.
Ward's past comes back when his wife of one day, Marina, comes into his life asking for a divorce so she can marry again. Little did Ward know, Marina only plans to marry to give their son a true father.

Marina Scott rides out on the range not knowing that the cowboy she meets is her destiny: her fianc's brother, Ward Dillon. Ward has come home for Ramon's wedding, and does not expect to fall in love at first sight. Though both he and Marina know it is wrong, they elope, positive their love will be all they need. How wrong they are.

When the newlyweds return, betrayal awaits. Ward, convinced of the lies his mother tells, leaves Marina and their unborn child to fight in the Civil War, unaware he has been duped.

Abandoned and scorned Marina finds a way to survive. Only years later when she locates Ward working on a ranch, does she understand the truth.

Marina arrives hoping to get Ward to agree to a divorce, but once he discovers they have a bright, wonderful son, he is not so sure he can set her free. Their old passion has never died.

As Ward and Marina try to work out their relationship a cholera epidemic strikes. With all their lives in danger Marina and Ward set aside their problems to help the community and uncover a love too powerful to destroy.

Isabelle is the kind of woman jake maxwell avoids at all costs. but he wonders if there is any way to stop her from branding his heart as her own.

The freedom of the range, the bawling of the longhorns, the lonesome night watch beneath a vast, starry sky-they got into a man's blood until he knew there was nothing better than the life of a cowboy; except the love of a good woman. Born and bred in Savannah, Georgia, Isabella was the kind of woman Jake Maxwell avoided at all cost. "Neat as a pin and stiff as starch," he classified her when she and her wagonload of orphans pulled up to his Texas ranch. But without any men of his own, the boys under her care were Jake's only chance of driving his beef to market. Still, he couldn't help wondering if he could teach a gang of outlaws-in-the-making to herd cattle; if he could keep his hands off the oh-so-proper belle if there was any way at all to stop Isabelle from branding his heart as her own.

Jake and Isabelle provide a great foundation for the rest of the cowboy series, with colorful characters and clear dialogue. With so many boys, it would be easy to confuse them, but each has a sufficiently different situation and characteristics to individualize them. I found the beginning a bit slow but the plot eventually picks up and takes enough twists and turns to keep the reader engrossed.
