Visitors of Jamaica will know of Rose HAll, one of the great tourist attractions of that wonderfully beautiful island. Rose Hall was the name of Jamaica's largest sugar plantation, and over a centurt ago it was run by the notorious Annie Palmer, a sadistic white woman, known as the 'Witch of Rose Hall', who, according to rumur, murdered her husband, and was responsible for the murder of many of her slaves.
This savage, and tremendously exciting novel, based on a Jamaican legend dating back over a hundred years, tells the story of Rose Hall and Annie Palmer, who for all her faults had a notion of grandeur and responsibility for the future of the colony. It begins in the early 1830s when young James Arthur arrives from England to take the job of bookkeeper at the plantation, only to find himself immersed int he problems of the slaves in the mills and in the fields. His relationship with the lovely, fascinating, hard and brilliant Annie makes up the core of the book.
This very powerful, graphic novel, explicit in its descriptions of cruelty, passion and the lot of the slaves, is also filled with the magic atmosphere of Jamaica. It is full of action, and has a hynotic quality that many readers will find irresistable.
