This is a collection of stories about the memorable dogs Herriot treated during his career. Some are funny and some are heartbreaking, but Herriot is a terrific writer and you can't help but get emotionally involed.
This is a heart-warming collection of stories by the author of "All Creatures Great and Small". It's about people and pets:
About the little dog who pines away after the loss of his best friend, whose life is saved by a puppy;
About a great Boxer whose noxious gas makes him untenable in the home of his highbrow owner- who loves him too much to give him away... and about the surprise solution to the dilemma;
The story of the miraculous recovery a blind boy's guide dog who picks up a poisoned 'treat';
... and many others-
about lap dogs, working dogs, mongrels- and the people who live with them and love them.
This is a worthwhile book if you like to read aloud to your kids..
(and, yes, I have read some of them to my husband!)
This is a nice compilation of some of the funniest and most poignant of James Herriot's experiences as a veterinarian in England. With vivid description of the lovely country itself, this is a wonderful introduction into the humor and wit of one of the most beloved animal doctors in the world. A great read-aloud.

I have loved all James Herriot books. Most chapters are small, individual stories in their own right; nice to be included in one 'themed' book, but this one re-tells many chapters from other, earlier books. If this is the first one you pick up, you will be delighted.
I'm a softee when it comes to dogs, and this book was a good one. Herriot's works are all good, of course, but this one really agrees with me because I'm such a dog nut. Many of the stories are taken from his other books, but he does add new commentary, and even as repeats they're worth reading again.
Love the stories in this book, it gives a view of a dog's life with the vet and dog lover perspective. I'm a dog lover and owner ,so I can relate to some of Herriot's stories. Herriot's stories are told in an easy to read way, and at the same time teaches about what kind of illness a dog can suffer and how different, in respect to humans, dogs behave when they are sick. They are still loving creatures and don't take their suffering with you. Maybe we need to learn more from them.
It's a fun book to read even if you're not a dog lover.
All of James Herriot's experiences with dogs throughout his veterinary career. Most of the stories in this book are pulled from his other books in the "All Creatures" series. There are three stories that are not seen elsewhere. As always, Herriot's experiences as a country vet are sentimental and touching. Some will have you laughing... others crying. I especially like this collection of dog stories and I think any other dog lover would too!
Its pretty simple, if you love dogs: then this is a classic must read. Each short story in this book is sweet, heartwarming, and at times heartbreaking. It will remind you of your love for dogs...and why they are man's best friend.
In this very special, heartwarming collection of favorite stories about dogs great and small, James Herriot tells us about his own dogs and all the wonderful people and animals we have come to love so much.
