I'm really wanting to try this author ... I know his books are set in various Parishes down in Louisiana ... which I seem to be drawn to ...  Has anyone read his books?  What do you think?  Can they be read out of order or in order?  Thanks!!

I read "In the Electric Mist with the Confederate Dead" and loved it.  I would say start with one that looks interesting to you and start there. If you like that then  you can pick up the series in order.  He's a very good writer.

I love the series, and I would read them in order if I were you.  Most of the stories seem "rich" or "full-bodied"  (if that even makes sense!)

As long as he stays in Louisiana I like his stuff. He knows the territory and has a real good feel (at least to me, and I have known a goodly number of Ardoins, Duhons, Zimerles, and Istres) for the people. I read one he set in West Texas, though, and what he did to geography was to this native Texan, UN-believable. He had folks in Deaf Smith county going across the Mexican border for an evening out and the characters in this one behaved like no Texas ranchers I have ever met  or heard of. Anything with Dave Robicheaux, though, I recommend highly.
