What ages are these books written for?  Are they suitable for a 10-11 year old who is an advanced reader?

I attempted to read the first book before knowing that they were written for a pre-teen/teen age group and it skewed decidedly below adult.  However, a bright child of the approximate age you mention should find the books quite entertaining. I know I would have, at that age!

I agree that you should read it first, but I would think these books are for someone at least a few years older.

My diaghter-in-law and 14 year old grandaughter loved them.  I barely made it through the first book and thought it was way too violent and otherwise dull.

Paterson's website has a whole section on the books, with comments from youth readers, teachers who have used them in class, lesson plans, and more. That might help you decide
