John Gribbin graduated with his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Sussex in 1966. Gribben then earned his master of science (M.Sc.) degree in astronomy in 1967, also from the Univ. of Sussex, and he earned his Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Cambridge (1971).

As a science writer, he has worked for the science journal Nature, and the magazine New Scientist and has written for The Times, The Guardian and the Independent as well as their Sunday counterparts and BBC radio.

He is best known for his book In Search of Schrödinger's Cat (1984).

In 1974, Gribben published, along with Stephen Plagemann, a book titled The Jupiter Effect, that predicted that the alignment of the planets in quadrrant on one side of the Sun in March 1982 would cause gravitational effects that would trigger earthquakes in the San Andreas fault, wiping out Los Angeles and its suburbs.Gribbin repudiated The Jupiter Effect in the July 17, 1980, issue of New Scientist magazine in which he stated that he had been "too clever by half".

In an article in the scientific journal Nature (February 1988), Gribbin was the first scientist to publicly suggest that the upcoming greenhouse effect might be reduced by adding large amounts of pulverized iron to the oceans of the world as a fertilizer for the aquatic plants.

Gribben published his 100th book, The Fellowship, in 2005.

Another of Gribben's books, Get a Grip on Physics (2003), experienced a sudden surge in sales at such ventors as Amazon.com after it was spotted in the photos of Tiger Woods's crashed automobile on November 27, 2009.
