John M. Cooper (b. 1939) is an American historian, author, and educator. His specialization is late 19th and early 20th century American history. Cooper is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His most recent book, A Biography, was published in 2009. It is described as "the first major biography of America’s twenty-eighth president in nearly two decades." The book was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography.
In 2009 Cooper was a contributing columnist to the New York Times editorial page, with the piece "Obama's Prize, Wilson's legacy".
In 1998 he was interviewed by PBS about Wisconsin historian Frederick Jackson Turner.
In 1996, he appeared in Part 1 of "T.R.: The Story of Theodore Roosevelt," part of PBS's American Experience documentary series.
