He communicates with a nurse and asks for someone to help him either die or leave the hospital to join a freak show.
While its theme is strongly anti-war, Trumbo notes in the foreword that he removed the book from publication on the eve of World War II because he did not want its message to obscure the issues around the current war.
Clips of the film version was used in the music video for the Metallica song "One". The song itself comes from an idea presented by drummer Lars Ulrich to singer James Hetfield that was very similar to the movie/book. Instead of enduring a long and arduous negotiation for rights to the film, Metallica decided to buy the movie outright, in order to use it in their video.« less
