Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters
Journal of a Novel The East of Eden Letters Author:John Steinbeck This is a day-by-day account of the writing of "East of Eden", Stainbeck's longest novel. It was kept in a wooden box carved by Steinbeck himself, bearing the title of the novel and the Hebrew characters for the word "TIMSHEL", which figures in a key episode of hte book. The journal is in the form of a series of letters to his close friend and... more » editor at Viking, Pascal Covici. Each day he began with a letter to Covici, on the left-hand pages of the book, and the text filled the right-hand pages. He used the letters as an "arguing ground for the story", or random thoughts, trial flights of wordmanship, and nuggets of information, both personal and public, about the author's convictions themselves. It was never intended for publication and never revised from the original handwritten notes. These letters are, in a sense, John Steinbeck's testament. The book was issued posthumously in cooperation with his widow Elaine.
