Jovah's Angel - Samaria, Bk 2
Author: Sharon Shinn
This is a standalone sequel to Archangel, set 150 years later in proverbially interesting times. Samaria is industrialized; the Manadavvi and Jansai are wealthier; the Edori are marginalized, their roaming lifestyle disrupted; and Jovah seems to be turning a deaf ear to his angels' prayers for abatement of increasingly destructive storms. Sharon Shinn's depictions of the glories of human song are amazing and original. Finally the mystery of what Jovah really is is resolved.
Very well done!

In a world where angels and humans coexist, angels hold power over society. Given the ability to change the weather, or heal the sick by calling on a higher power for help, angels are able to guide civilization in the direction they think best. When, over a period of time, their powers become less and less reliable, society starts becoming unstable.
The Archangel Delilah suffers an injury which makes her unable to fly, and Jovah chooses a new ruler, the bookish and reclusive Alleluia....who doesn't want the job!

Recommended. One of the books in the series that is a good stand-alone story.

I really ejoyed this book, thought it sat forever one my shelf because I thought there were more interesting reads. I ordered it here while I was reading Archangel. halfway through, I remembered why I ordered this one so quickly. I love the way Shinn writes. She spins a wonderful story--I love stories about religion or other cultures, so this was really something enjoyable to me.

I didn't realize that there were other books that had to do with Samaria other than these three. I'm very glad there are, because this is one of those sets of stories you can't leave alone.

I initially thought I would have a problem since they are chronological, but brand new characters in each story. I liked both sets of characters and cannot wait to read more of them. I really do usually like trilogies to actually be about the same sets of characters though.
