Lehrer was born Kate Tom Staples in Waco, Texas, an only child, to Thomas Malcolm Staples, a county extension agent, and Lucy Joplin, a social worker. She has been married since 1960 to novelist and PBS anchor Jim Lehrer. They have three children and six grandchildren.
