Today I received a book that I've already read!  sad  I didn't catch the title and sure wish there was a pop-up from PBS that says, you've already requested this book, do you want to again?

This only happens when an email comes to me saying a book on my Wish List is available and when I look at the person's book list to make it more convenient to ship another book.

Any recommendations are apprecaited?

Also, it would be nice if I could subscribe to have email replies to this thread sent to me.  Am I missing something?

There is an option under Settings to get emails on Watched threads.   Go to Setting under your My Account.

If you would like to NOT receive any of the following emails just check the box for the appropriate email.

(I personally mark books that I've read or have with the TBR list.  It is getting large, but it does cut down on my dups.)

Robin, there IS a pop-up that tells you you already ordered the book!  The problem is it's for the specific ISBN, so if you order another version it won't show up.

(I know because I just recently tried to reorder a book I ordered years ago!)

Emily, I'm confuesd.  I mark the box NOT if I want it to be emailed to me?  For example, none of my settings are marked and I didn't receive any notification that you or Diane replied to my post.

Ok Diane I need to check this one out.  I have received a POP-UP on one book I previously ordered.  I'm thinking maybe it's a book I already had that's in my OFFER books where I wasn't notified that this book I had read (prior to ordering from a PBS'er).  Basically, it's in the system but only as an offer book I have, not a book I previously requested, read and then reposted.....if this makes sense.

You could try rating all the books you've read - but you'd have to do all of the different ISBNs in the system. At least that way when you saw yellow stars by the book you'd know you already read and rated it.

I considered putting all the different ISBN versions of books on my BIR list, but being realistic, I'm not going to be able to do that.  The BIR note on the book information page is more helpful to me than the order pop-up since I read so many books from other sources as well.  I've kind of resigned myself to the fact that I'm just going to acquire duplicates here and there, with the amount of books I get!  But it was helpful to get the order popup the other day.

When I receive or have a book, I put it on my TBR or BIR list, as applicable.  Then I go through Search and look for that title.  Then I go to  NOTE and either type in TBR or BIR for the particular book I have.  I also mark the ones I don't have with a *.  Then when I see that title, regardless of the ISBN, I click on the "Yellow Note" in the left upper corner, and it gives me the information (TBR, BIR or * meaning this is another version).  I know it's a lot of work, and I probably have too much time, but that's the way I keep from getting duplicates.  Good luck on whatever method you try. Robin, did you put this thread as a Watched Topic?

I'm very anal and I listen to lots of audio books.   If I didn't keep track and then double check, I know I would be ordering duplicates all the time.  I have a book journal on an Excel spreadsheet and it has saved me countless number of times.  I also rate my books, so it's easy to check to see if I like a particular author, books in a series, etc.  I also have a BIR list on PBS too, but I like my spreadsheet better.

The email notices happen only if you 1) watch the thread and 2) do not have the box checked.   You check the boxes that you do not want to get emails about.  The default is to send emails.

I actually do rate every edition and put every edition on my TBR. It's not failproof, since sometimes editions get added later -- and when there are a lot of no-ISBN editions, there's not much point -- but it works pretty well and isn't particularly difficult or time-consuming.

Lately I do more at GoodReads, which is a better place for keeping track of your books read regardless of edition. I just wish the info were transferable from here to there and vice versa.

I'm impressed!  I've thought of rating all versions of books I've read, but haven't taken the time.  But you're right -- it wouldn't take that much time.  And it would keep me from ordering duplicates, which I do too.

I just look up all versions of a book before I WL, order or RL it and if one shows as being in my transaction archive or on my BIR or TBR list then I don't order it. If it's one I've read then I rate them all so now they're all marked.  Takes a few seconds.  If it's on my TBR pile then I just use the personal note. I use my TBR only for TBR books and only want the version I have and non-read books on it. I use it as a judge as to how out of control my TBR is and to see what I need to acquire of series.  I don't want books I've already read on it.

I usually search by title & author to find all versions of a book and not by ISBN. I don't care which ISBN or edition of a book I get, I just want to read it.  So it's not an extra step for me.

I also use goodreads. It's free, has great message boards and will list ebooks.   You can create your own shelves.  I will sometimes open goodreads on a seperate window and look up a book there to see if I've read it or not. Then I can update here.  My guess is that they don't apply it to all editions here when you add it to a list is because many members would probably not want that. I know I wouldn't want it on my TBR and RL.  It would make the lists too long and cumbersome.  But I never look at my BIR list so I don't care how long it gets. I just use it to help me not get duplicates.

I have yet to order a duplicate from PBS of a book that I already ordered a version of through PBS.  I have ordered duplicates of ones that I forgot to log into PBS.  So now I am fanatical about logging books I own into PBS and goodreads.

My problem is at the thrift store.   But now I just write the title down if I'm in doubt and take my chances that it'll be there next time.  Or I look it up on my Kindle which is time consuming but better than rebuying a book.  Especialy since my only local thrift store charges $2 for MMPs and more for trades and hardcovers.

just had this happen to me for the first time ever today.  If you have auto-request set up for books on your wish list, you might want to try turning that off.  This is what caused that problem for me.  I had multiple editions of a book listed for example, one paperback and one hardback.  I got one, stuck it on my shelf of books to read, then the other was auto requested when it became available and I didn't realize until the sender already mailed it.  I figure I'll just get rid of or repost one copy.
