This very brief story (27 pages including colored illustrations) is supposed to depict slave life in South Carolina through the eyes of a young African-American girl - but Kessie's life seems much easier than that described by most first-person accounts of that "peculiar institution," and neither she, nor any of the other slaves she knows seems to have any feeling that there is anything wrong with being a chattel slave, or owning another human being. I cannot recommend this book for children.
