I believe the book was written in the 60s or earlier.  Several kids noticed a tree stump in a front lawn that resembled a ship.  When they decided to climb on it to play, it turned into a real ship.  I think maybe they all met there after school every day, b/c it was on their way home.  They were afraid they would get caught.  Maybe their parents wondered where they were after school?  I think the woman who lived in the house behind the stump knew that it was magic.

Please PM me if you have any idea re: the title.  I don't always check back on the post b/c it's difficult to find.  Thanks!  Amie

Nothing has come up with any of my searches that match what you are describing.  Are there any details you can remember? Like what part of the country?  Time frame in the story?  Where did they go on the ship? Was it a space ship or a sea ship? Did the woman have a name?

What age level?

Younger Kids? Older Kids? Teens?

There's a series with a female character named Miss Pickerell that goes on all sorts of adventures but I can't find anything referring to a tree stump turning into a ship. These were published in the early to mid 50's.

The Famous Five Series by Enid Bllyton, isn't about kids who find an old tree stump but they find an old wreck.
