Excellent tale about Wilton McCleary, a detective in old Philadelphia. This is the first of Mark Graham's series about Wil. McCleary is a somewhat tormented man, a survivor of the Andersonville prison from the Civil War. He is basically honest and tries to do the right thing in the face of corruption. In this book, he tries to find the kidnappers of a prize winning rat fighting dog, and later, the kidnappers of a small boy. Events coverge, and Wil has a hard time of it. I really liked this book.
