Hi!  I got my kindle fire hd a couple of months ago, and have been very happy with it.  Over the past few days, though, I've noticed that a bunch of games that I've been playing for a long time with no wireless are now giving me error message that an internet connection is needed in order to play them.  Huh?  Also, I've been having difficulty connecting to wireless.  It says it's connected, but there's an X over the wireless icon in the upper right corner.  I've tried turning the kindle off and then back on, but it hasn't helped.  I'm not sure what's going on or if the two are connected.  And I can't access the owners manual, because it's online!  Does anyone have any advice for me?  Thanks in advance!

Hard to say because we need to know HOW you are connecting to wireless. IS it your home internet that is wireless(wifi)? Do you have it password protected? Or are you just getting wifi from whatever you can around you as that can change when people see others are stealing their wifi. Otherwise you'll need to contact amazon and ask them or google the problem.

As for apps, look them up and see what requirements they now have. It's not uncommon for updates to change things and now they need internet to play.

I don't have wireless at home - I live out in the country and its way too expensive.  I have tried the wireless at several restaurants, coffee shops, etc. that advertise free wireless - even McDonalds, which I've never had problems with in the past.  None have worked.  I'm going to try at work tomorrow as the final test.  Since all the apps have gone out at about the same time (even my calculator, which I cannot imagine would require an internet connection), I'm guessing they are related.  I checked out the Amazon forums and saw some similar problems, so I am going to contact customer service in the morning and see what they say.  Thanks for the ideas, though!

McD in my areas now give customers passwords to connect.   IF you have internet at home WiFi unit costs one time $35.

Yeah....if you have internet at home, all you need to do is buy a router. Some cable companies will give you one for free. Plug it in and you have wifi.

lYeah, I really need to look into that.  The problem is that we have a slower connection so we can't watch videos and stuff, which is probably mostly what I would do on my Kindle.  I may need to suck it up and upgrade.  Thanks for the reminder, though!  I did the hard reboot last night, and then went in to work and was able to get on the wireless there.  After going online and then off again, my apps started working again.  I guess it just needed to be reset.  :)  I didn't know that about McD's, either.  Usually it takes me to a screen where I click the terms square and I'm on.  This time when I did it, I got an error message.  I'll have to try again and see what's what.  Thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Laura if you have a slow connection, the videos won't work well, but you would be able to connect well enough to get the apps going (the permissions and ads that they need to access) as well as download books, surf the web, stuff like that. So I think it would be worth getting a router to provide wireless access for yourself, even if you can't stream music and videos.

Here's a VERY nice set of instructions for adding a launcher to your FIRE HD (no rooting). This is what I use on my Fire HD, and on DD's Fire2.

Have you tried this?

You would have to install it on an android phone or other device first, back up and then transfer the apk.

I found a direct download link here.

Worth a try!

To be able to help we'd need to know what the error message said when you were at McD's... I've never been able to get McD's wifi to work, they used to have it free, now you have to buy something to get a code and still that doesn't work. But people tend to camp out there and never can find a seat inside very often.
Could be it's McD:s and not you.

Thanks, everyone!  Friday morning is my "breakfast at McD's after I drop dd off at school" morning - I'll let you know what happens.  Xen, I forgot what the error message was - if it doesn't work, I'll write it down, though.  :)  I will also look into the suggestions about routers and downloads.  Thanks again!

ETA:  Went back to McD's, and all was well.  The hard reset must have done the trick, thank goodness!

Yes, I put ADW on my HD as soon as I got it (earlier this month). Love it!

I've had it on the Fire2 since Christmas, too.
