UGH!  I charged it last night and I went on this morning to read and it didn't even turn on.  I did have one of those leather covers but silly me thought that they still wouldn't be selling the ones that made the Kindle's go bad.  I have emailed them with the issue and hope they get back with me.  I'm pretty upset about this.

How can a cover make the Kindle go bad?   I have a leather cover on mine...the only thing I remember reading at the time was that the covers without the little elastic straps were allowing the Kindle to fall out of the cover and break.   Would like to know if covers are causing other issues!

I hope Amazon takes care of you!  I've always been happy with their CS.

Slide the power button to the right and hold. This button is located on top of the Kindle beside the headphone jack. Amazon.com's diagram shows the power button on the diagram labeled "Top View" here. Place one finger on the power button, slide it toward the right and hold it for 15 seconds. Then, release the button, according to Amazon.com's Kindle Troubleshooting page

15 seconds is Longer than you think LOL  Mine flickers before the time is up making me think its comming on but not!  I had to hold mine once to 20 second count....guess I count faster than the Kindle LOL

i think the cover that was causing the problem was the one that had 2 little metal hooks that slide into the side of the kindle. If you look at the side of your kindle you should see 2 small slots. So it is actually touching inside the kindle. On the lighted version of the cover I think this allowes it to power the built in book light.  i thought the complaints were that it cause problems with the unlighted cover only.

It looks like a really secure way to hold the kindle in the cover (a co-worker has the lighted cover), but if it caused other issues, that is a problem.

I had one of the unlighted covers and it did cause problems for my Kindle. The little hooks are metal even though they look plastic. They cause an electrical short in the Kindle.

Wow, the article about Kindle covers was news to me!

I've had a Kindle 2 and the standard leather cover for it since December of 2009. I've never experienced any sort of problems with my Kindle at all. I've recently swtiched to a zip-up case with memory foam instead of a cover, but that was by personal choice.
