I thought Amazon had discontinued this model, but when I checked today they had it back on sale.  It looks to be new units, as they have a separate listing for refurbished ones.

That's great. I think they should keep selling it, since it is a great product. It has audio and twice the storage of the paperwhite.

Maybe the next generation will combine those characteristics with the light....I'd buy one.

Don't know if I'm just not looking in the right place, but the only KT I could find on Amazon was a refurbished one. But since it was price more than a paperwhite, I decided not to purchase at this time.

I had a Kindle Touch, and gave it to my mother. Now after having been through 2 paperwhites, and comparing them to my Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini, I have decided that I think the text is sharper on the un-lighted eink readers which I have tried.

So the Kobo Mini, which has 167 dpi, compared to the Kobo Glo, which has 212 dpi, actually has sharper text. The text looks fuzzy when the light is on.

In comparison, the Kindle Touch has 167 dpi, the Kindle Paperwhite has 212 dpi.

The Kindle Touch has 4gb and audio, and the same UI as the PW1, which I like (unlike the updated PW2 UI which was a horrid update).

So I don't think the dpi (resolution) makes a huge difference, when the light layer on top of the lighted devices tends to wash out the text.

So, to make a long story longer, I found a good price on a Kindle Touch and ordered another one. Of course I will jailbreak it and add custom sleep screens, fonts, and the margin hack. All in all, I think it is a better device than the Paperwhite.

Anne, that was actually the selling point for me--the 4G storage.  I never really wanted a lighted reader because I can't read with some ambient light somewhere.  So I'd have the light on anyway.  Most of my reading is done on an ereader now and I needed something that would hold as much as possible, and all of my collections. I was having problems with my K3 because I had so much on it.  After rebooting it several times and not solving the problem, I got a good price on the Touch. I've been enjoying it ever since I got it a few months ago. I've hardly ever picked up my K3 since then.

Good to know, Heather. I'm also interested in the text to speech. Not that I ever used it on my Kindle Keyboard. But I am interested in it, now. The hack I'll be putting on makes it so text to speech works on all books, so I assume that would be side-loaded, as well. I was checking and none of the other major brands of ereaders have audio or 4gb space anymore. Which I find ridiculous.

Yes, some have card slots, and that is good, but I think these types of devices work better when they don't have to work like that. So more internal storage works better, in other words. For example, my Kobo Mini has only 2 gb, my Kobo Glo has 2 gb+ 4gb SD card. The Glo has 91 shelves (13 pages). The Mini has 78 shelves (13 pages). The Glo takes 12 seconds to open the "shelves" page. The Mini takes 4 seconds. I don't think the difference has anything to do with number of books, it's number of shelves, on these devices. I am going to experiment with putting all the books on the internal card of the Glo, and see if that makes any difference.

The thing I always hated about the Kindle Touch was the color, and the flimsy case they made for it. So rather than buy yet another skin, I've ordered a black Marware silicone thing to completely cover the edges. I may put black electrical tape over the home button, or around it, too.

My final conclusion is that the Kindle Touch was the best ereader device Amazon ever made, (aside from the silver color), and that includes being better than the Paperwhite. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on another one.

It's here, but I have to wait for it to warm up before I start playing with it.

Well crud. Instead of KT wifi with no SO, looks like she sent me KT 3G with SO.

Yes it does wifi. I will contact Amazon about the SO. I don't want to get the seller in trouble, though. Sometimes it's hard to know what model you have.

I'd contact them about the SO. In the past you could pay to have it removed, but maybe they'll do it for free.

It may be the Seller paid to have it removed, and then when she de-registered it it defaulted back to it's factory settings. But it certainly could be they just didn't know which one they had.

I checked with Amazon, and they said it was supposed to be without special offers! So they are removing them. I have to connect to wifi and hopefully it will go right through.

YES! I am glad. I like custom sleep screens!

ETA now they send an email that I was charged. So they have gotten another email from me!

No, the seller sold it as ad free, and Amazon said it IS supposed to be ad free, so no one should have been charged.

Still waiting for a reply.

They are issuing a refund for the charge.

Me too! Got the jailbreak in, the patch for margins/hypens and more, the screen savers hack, now doing the backdoor lock, so they can't sneak any more updates on me. It's just about perfect, now. Time to load it with some books!

Anne, sometimes I have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about with your hacks and jailbreaks. cheeky If you ever want to do a road trip a few hundred miles north, we could get together and you could give me a tutorial. LOL. I still haven't figured out how to get the plug-ins working for Calibre to de-DRM stuff, so I am sometimes limited on what I can get.  Not that I have a shortage of stuff to read, mind you.  Come to think of it, it's probably a good thing I can only get Kindle compatible stuff--helps keep the TBR from growing exponentially, and helps keep my pocket a little more flush.

Love to get together, but don't travel much, if I can help it!

"Jailbreak" is just how to get at the root of the system. It can be complicated, yes. There are some extremely smart programmers over at mobileread who figure out how to do all that. I just follow the steps as best I can. Have to do it, if I want custom sleep screen pictures, margins that adjust better than stock, hyphenation.

One nice thing about the Touch, is one can do just a few simple things without hacking, and get one's own fonts on it. The same technique works on the first Paperwhite, also, but not the 2nd. Simply add a blank file (no extensions such as txt) called USE_ALT_FONTS to the Kindle, and restart. You will then see fonts already on the Kindle that were hidden before. Then, you can add your own, if you like. I have the same font on my tablets and my Kobo and Kindle ereaders. I like the sense of continuity....my eyes appreciate it.

I broke down and ordered a cover (not Amazon's) which was actually free (ebay bucks), and a skin that cost me less than $2. Then I can use my m-edge light with it, when I need to.

Such a nice reader. I love the home button.

Well I am going to offer the kindle touch to my mother in law. She loves to read and I have just given her the last of the paper books I have on hand. So I am going to try and get her to read on it, and see how she likes it. When I mentioned it, she asked if it could get on the internet, so maybe she wants a tablet, instead. I will let her use both and see what she likes best. But for a non-techie person I think the kindle touch would be better.
