Got one for my birthday but don't know much about it.  Can I download books from the library?  I have seen some free ones on Amazon but have no idea where else to get the free ones.  Plan on doing some research but you guys seem so knowledgeable so I thought I'd start here first.  Any tips or info you give me will be great!  Thanks all!

I don't think you can download library books for it yet but that's supposed to be coming soon.

You can download freebies from anywhere, you just have to convert them on your computer to get them onto your Kindle.  Easiest way to do that is by using a nifty free program called Calibre.  There's a way of having Amazon convert them for you also.  I'm sure someone with a Kindle will be along soon to let you know how to do that too.

You can use your computer's email program to email documents to your Kindle. I like the way Calibre does it better, though.

Lori, I got one for my Bday in May and I must say...for someone who said, Oh I don't want a Kindle,. I like books.....I HAVE FLIPPED OVER MY KINDLE!!  I almost feel guilty since I have about 200+ books sitting on shelves all over my house! blush  I have been using Amazon, go to the Kindle Store and first try all the free Kindle books. There are thousands!  Then there are many prices for .99 and up. For new releases it cost about half..or maybe a little less than half. I bought a book on there ABOUT free books available.  I've down down loaded about 75 so far.Down loading is so simple it's amazing....takes maybe 60 seconds. I've mainly been downloading loads of classics that I should have read but haven't and am really enjoying them.  I got the lighted cover because I do alot of reading at night in bed. The only thing I would say is I've had to get used to the 2 button on each side with arrows...one to turn page, one to turn it back. Both are on each side and sometimes my fingers will touch the wrong one...they are really sensitive. The leather cover helps because you hold it more like a book.  I know there is a way to share books but haven't figured that out yet.

Good luck with yours..ENJOY

and I am loving every minute of it. I have the kindle app for my Iphone and for my computer. Have mostly ordered free books. I read a lot of paranormal romance series and will be pre ordering for the kindle. Trying to also read some of the many books I have yet to read on my bookshelves. So now I am reading more than one book at a time. Which I haven't don't since I was much younger. I also have audible books on the kindle, iphone, ipod and computer. Since I got the Kindle I rarely watch TV anymore.

Hi!  I registered at www.ereaderiq.com and they email me pretty much everyday with new books that appear as freebies on Amazon.com for the Kindle.  This is a good way to stay abreast of what is available for free on an ongoing basis.  There is lots of good information on their site also, and you can set up your account to track the prices of various Kindle books so where there is a price drop they will automatically email you.

BTW, this is my first post at PBS.  I  guess I am out of lurk mode.blush

Thanks everyone for the comments and help!  I'm loving my kindle so far.  So many books so little time!  I noticed the offers from Amazon on the kindle are great.  I bought an ebook for 1.00 the other day and then they had an offer getting 10 back after spending 10 using your credit card!  Free books are great!
