Pauvre M. de Lallière! A possible forebear of M. DArtagnan, is caught between the Valois King and the Bourbon renegade. So here it is; the Catholic Church is wealthy and still meddles in politics of state; France is threatened from the north and faces an insurrection from the southern provinces, yet still plans to invade Italy (again). And, everyone is to be taxed again to support regal whims. Yet, unlike today, the wealthy are also to be hard hit through confiscations, etc. Worthy of Dumas peré, but sans the drollness, your author paints a vivid picture of 16th century France: 1523 to be exact. Here is another forgotten author who deserves much better recognition than some old, poorly made renditions of his manuscripts.
