Yes another one. I read this about 2 yrs ago but I'm not sure when it came out.

I think it had a blonde woman and a dark haired man on the cover but I'm not sure.

Anyway it takes place in late 19th century Midwest I think.  At any rate it was not a typical Western taking place on a ranch.  If I remember right it was like a small town.  I want to say the hero was the Sherrif but I could be mistaken. Anyway hero has always been in love with heroine.  But heroine loves his best friend. The 3 grew up together and were always friends.  BF is a bad boy.  He has a gambling/drinking problem. He proposes to herione and gets her to sleep with him.  She ends up pregnant and BF doesn't turn up to wedding. Hero steps in when heroine tells him she's pregnant. If I remember right they lie to the towns people and hero's family that they love each other and realized she was making a mistake by marrying the other one.  I think the hero has a father and a sister.  I don't remember any family for the heroine off hand.  Anyway hero wants heroine to fall in love with him and eventually she does. But the BF shows up and want her back and his kid.  Although she might end up miscarrying. I'm not sure. But I know the BF does come back and causes some trouble.  I'm also remembering that hero might have caught the BF sneaking out of town on his wedding day.  So he goes to the church to warn her and that's when she tells him she's pregnant.  Since he loves her he offers to marry her to give her child his name.  I also want to say that his family was not all that happy when he married her because they knew he had always loved her and that she originally loved the BF. They were worried about her hurting the hero.

You know, Mary, this story sounds really familiar, although I'm terrible with titles. Can't place it, but I'll be checking in to see if someone else can name it. I love western historicals; I may have already read it, but either way, sounds like a great story!

It's a similar story line to Shotgun Wedding by Maggie Osborne, but that's not it.  I saw the synopsis for this book fairly recently and thought the same thing then.  I can't remember at the moment what it was, but I'll see if I can track it down.

I'm scanning my Linda Lael Miller synopses... it reminds me of her historicals.

It made me think of Miller too, one of the McKettrick books maybe?  Is it Shotgun Bride I'm thinking of where the hero is a marshall, or am I just crossing that up because of the Osborne title?  Anyhoo... I don't think this is the one I'm thinking of, but there's also The Way Home by Megan Chance.  Still looking...

It wasn't the Megan Chance book or a McKettrick book. I read the Mckettrick books and I remember all of those.

They were definately childhood friends. I do remember that. The 3 were friends and she chose the bad boy (of course) and the good guy had secretly loved her.  I do remember that.  SHe feels guilty for him marrying her to saver her reputation and he worries that she will never love him and always pine for the bad boy.  His family worries that she'll hurt him.

Urg.  Well, I'm not finding whatever it was... yet:P  You should try the Osborne book too, btw.  It's good, like pretty much everything she writes.  Like I said, very similar story line.

A KISS TO DREAM ON by Stephanie Mittman

Search on fictiondb.com website for historical romance genre, american west time period, with synopsis containing "altar", resulted in 17 possible titles. Sorted by publication date, then started reading synopses starting with those published prior to 2006 and working backward.

I DO love that website!
