It doesn't make it any less annoying.

I recently got offered a WL book, I have been at #1 since almost day one (if not the day I put it on my list, maybe I was number two..)  it's been almost a year, and I am probably hours away from it getting cancelled.

Now why would a person post a book, I accepted less than an hour after the request hit my email, and then ignore it or never log in?  I even went so far as to order another book, same author but one that was on her shelf, thinking she would respond to the prospect of two incoming credits, and nothing.  Now I can't tell how long she's been a member, when I click her name, no profile.  But she only had three books on her shelf before I ordered the second book, and as of today only one, so I know there is at least one more person who is going to be sad at no book.

Could be she's new, but you'd think that she would be looking for orders to get those credits rolling in...

*sigh*  I know there is no real answer, it's just fustrating.

It is really frustrating, especially when you have been waiting so long. It makes me crazy btut then I try to imagine all the good reasons why this might happen.  Something could have happened in their family, they might not understand how it works or they might only have internet accessability a few times a week. Maybe they didn;t have enough money to ship 3 books out in one week (they should have put their shelf on hold)  The good news is that you won't lose your place on the WL. Hopefully this person will get back in touch and you'll have your book soon. Sorry that this has happened.

You know, sometimes I wonder if ordering an extra book makes it harder for the person to send the package--if they are new, they may only have used the printed wrapper to send a book and then would have to figure out how to wrap two books together.  I don't want to discourage anyone from ordering additional books, most people love that.  Hopefully they are just waiting til the last minute!

Hi Tammy!

I understand your frustration. I had an offer of a WL book last week. And immediately after had a PM from the member that said "DO NOT SEND". Which, as you know only served to confused me. So I sent them a PM telling them that "they" had posted the book, not the other way around. I asked them to cancel the order if they posted it by mistake. Well, I came in from working a long hard shift yesterday, and there's the book in my mail box. Seems to be working itself out, huh? No, the book has water damage and a chunk missing from the cover, hardcover, BTW. And it still isnt marked mailed!

This is only the 2nd RWAP book I have ever received since joining PBS. But since I can even mark it RWAP, since I cant mark it Received until it times out sometime tomorrow, it is even a bit more frustrating. Oh, well, I guess someone in the Damaged Book thread will want it after I am done readling it.

Mariela,

The Damaged Book thread is a red "sticky" thread at the top of the Book Bazaar forum.

Tammy T: Now why would a person post a book, I accepted less than an hour after the request hit my email, and then ignore it or never log in?

I don't get it either. I can understand when someone changes his mind about a book he's wish-listed. But posting books and ignoring requests is just bizarre.

I'm in the same situation you are right now, Tammy. A book I really want is about to time out. And the same thing happened to the last two books that popped up under my "Wish Granted" tab. What on earth is going on?

Jeri D: I had a person cancel a WL book once saying they didn't know they had to pay to mail their books out.

Lol. Bummer, isn't it?

Tammy,

I did something similar.  Ordered two books from the person thinking it would help.  I was semi interested in the second book.  The first person let it go.  One book went through two other people before it finally got sent to me - hasn't arrived yet.  The second is now on it's third waiting to be accepted person.

I guess I'm weeding out quite a few people.

Jeri D - maybe the person that cancelled thought that the requestor paid the postage...lol.

Tammy--

How frustrating on something you've waited for so long.

Sometimes new members post their bunch of books, then get overwhelmed by the number of responses if they have a lot of WL books.  Then they send paniced message to Tour Guides saying things like, "What do I do?!? I only budgeted XYZ for postage" or "I didn't expect this kind of response".  I can't say that's what happened here, but it is possible.

Cheers,

Catt

Tammy, I feel your pain.  It makes no sense to me.   I recently had something very similar happen (see the "What are my odds" thread).

BTW  - I've been meaning to ask you for ages- Is your screen name Tex Guinan related?

This just happened to me with a book that has been on my WL for a year. I was wondering, why did they post it? It was a let down as I was quite excited to see it pop up. :O(

I am in the same boat. I have been waiting for 6 months for two different books that both popped up 4 days ago from two different people. I accepted them within 30 minutes, and neither one has responded yet. :-(   I don't get it at all. the last time it happened, by the time I got back on the wish list 5 days later, I was number 4 and I am still waiting on that book to come up.

My two books are still Waiting for Member. I PM'd them both and one person responded and said they planned on mailing on Saturday and hoped I liked the book. I looked them both up and they are both new members that just joined the day I got the books. So, I PM'd the one that responded and explained about checking "I can mail" as soon as possible. Maybe we have newbies that just don't know or understand those of us sitting here thinking we are being ignored.

Caviglia, actually it's a Star Trek character.  Next Gen, bartender played by Whoopi Goldberg.  I just like the character, and it kind of fit me, since bartending is something I've done a few times.

Well the book did time out, so I sent a PM telling her that I was cancelling the second book as well, but if she ever reposted I would reorder the second one if it is on her shelf.  I checked today, and her shelf is on hold, so maybe something came up, or maybe she didn't quite realize that posting a WL book that is autorequested would still need action on her part?  I have hope that she will come back and repost.

It is fustrating, so it helps to be able to whine complain about it to others who've been there.  lol.

I thought that if you were waiting on someone to respond you just went back to the number 1 spot.  If that's not how it works then people could just say they had books that they personally wanted but didn't really have and then get themselves on the WL ahead of you right?

I had this happen to me on a book I had been at #1 for months on and I pm'd the person just before it timed out - and they actually responded! Something about not getting around to looking and email and thanking me for letting them know, and then it timed out and I waited several more months before someone else posted it and I finally got it. What is up with that? I dunno! Weird and frustrating!

When you don't go back to #1, it might be because someone had their acct on hold. took it off hold while you were waiting for the mbr to accept and they were ahead of you, or maybe others were ahead of you waiting for some other mbr to accept the offer and it timed out - hard to say. Again, weird and frustrating. Luckily, not life-altering though.

I once had a WL book that finally came up, I accepted, and then it timed out with no action. Then about a month later it comes up again and it's the same person offering the book. They said they sent it that time, but guess what, it got lost in the mail???

I'm hoping the person who offered my much wanted, recently timed-out book will reappear.  I'm #1 on the WL and it looks as if it has never been posted.  It's a reference books, so I don't think it's something that people would list very often.  I think I'll have to order it from Amazon.  Luckily, it's not very expensive.  And I know we've all said this, but why bother to post books and then vanish?

Ah, I've never watched the Whoopie era Next Gen - but I'm betting her character was named after the legendary Texas Guinan, proprietress & barkeep of the most legendary of the 1920s New York speakeasies.  She's absolutely fascinating!

Yep, and ironically, I was just offered a different WL book the next day, I accepted right away and guess what?  We are on day three, no action.

head/desk

Different person so I am hoping they get on the ball and accept & send soon.

Caviglia, after reading the Wiki page, it seems she was which really doesn't surprise me at all, tptb rarely do something at random they like adding bits like this into the canon of Trek.  Thanks for the link, I love it when I can learn something new about my favorite passion lol.
