Be aware that Davis is writing from the perspective that the Bible is a book full of myths. He likens a lot of the Genesis stories to myths and legends from other cultures, but does not entertain the idea that maybe many other cultures have legends about a worldwide flood, etc, because it actually happened. And he brings up two accounts of creation like this is some huge controversy. I had to look hard to even see what he was talking about. What he is referring to is clearly an overview of creation, then more detail as we get into the nitty gritty. The good thing is that it is causing me to continually reach for my Bible to dig deeper and find out firsthand what It has to say.

"plenty of surprising yet credible breaths of frsh air on an old subject"
I could find backup for almost all of the "surprising breaths of fresh air."

This book is definitely not written by someone who believes the Bible is the inspire words of God. As a Christian I started this book thinking I was going to learn a lot of really neat information about Hebrew scriptures and stuff that I just miss when I am reading the Bible on my own. After getting just a little ways into this book I was wondering if, as a Christian, I should be reading this. It presents everything in the Bible as a myth. Like other reviewers said it compares the Bible to myths of other cultures but does not take into account that other cultures could have these myths because these events did happen. Also like the other reviewer said, I often find myself reading this book with my Bible open next to it. Some of the information regarding the Hebrew Bible was interesting. I think that it is enlightening in the way that I am seeing the Bible from another perspective. I find that this book has caused me to dig into the scriptures to find the truth, which is not presented in this book. I would not recommend this book in most instances.

Unfortunately, Kenneth Davis has a very low view of Scripture. His low view of inspiration then leads to endless speculation and the fallacies of the "higher criticism" movement which came out of Germany in the 19th century.

The book is engagingly written, and offers a good insight here and there. But in terms of helping anyone actually understand the Bible as the Word of God - this book simply does not do the job.

In the end, this book will undermine one's faith and confidence in the Bible.
