When I was a child I read a wonderful old book about a boy who lives at a military academy and meets up w/ an old man who lives in an old house w/ a whirlygig on top. I LOVED it and want to get it for my dd. Anyone else read it and remember it?

Thanks,

Lisa

I'll look for it tomorrow, time to put DD to bed!

Approximately what year would it have been published? And is there anything else about the setting or plot that you remember?

I think it was published in the 50's or 60's. It was an oldish book when I read it in the late 70's. No idea about the publisher though. No one has been able to find it for me. I'm sure it's OOP.

Thanks,

Lisa

Was it science fiction? I found this one pubished in 1948.

Space Cadet
by Robert A. Heinlein. Illus. by Clifford N. Geary

Summary:A young man reports for the final tests for appointment as a cadet in the Interplanetary Patrol, survives the tests, studies in the school ship, and goes on a regular Patrol vessel and encounters danger on Venus.

I'll keep looking, the search engine I use is pretty much hit or miss.  It either finds it right away or not....it may take some more hints to get a match.

Not SciFi at all. Lonely boy in military school who spends the Christmas break w/ an old man in an old house w/ a whilygig on top of it. I've googled too, but no luck.

thanks

The book you are looking for is The Whistling Whirligig by Ben Shecter.  It sounded familiar so I looked in my keeper books and I have it.  It is about a boy named Josh who goes to a military academy and Mr. Otis Wicker who owns a house with a whirligig on top.  It's a good book!!
