The Kon Tiki Expedition: By Raft Across the South Seas
The Kon Tiki Expedition By Raft Across the South Seas Author:Thor Heyerdahl, F.H. Lyon, J.M. Scott Inscription on this edition: — "Born in 1914, educated at the University of Oslo. A year after taking his degree in 1936 he went to the Marquesas Islands of the Pacific and there made ethnological researches for two years, living among the natives a life as primitive as theirs. — From this period dates the birth of his theory of the ocean drift. H... more »e followed up this work by two more years among the Coast Indians of British Columbia. Then came the war during which he served with the parachute unit of the Free Norwegian Army-Air Force. Anyone who came across this unit was impressed by their dash and eagerness for action.
As this book tells, the Kon-Tiki Expedition was launched as soon as possible after the armistice. It is of interest that Heyerdahl did not rest upon his laurels after the successful conclusion of his remarkable voyage. Being honoured by learned societies in many countries he felt it incumbent upon him to write more detailed and scientific accounts of what he had done, and also to engage in further researches in the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island. One is left with the picture of a man of action kept very busy in library and office. He is also, one may add, a family man."« less
