As he picked up his hat, which had fallen to the ground, a ruddy mark was visible between his eyes and a red drop trickled slowly down his upper lip. He did not retaliate, but thrust his thumbs into his side pockets and stood quietly firm, staring blankly at his assailant. Jack Hamlyn had grown pale, and looked exceedingly uncomfortable, conscious, perhaps, that he had chosen an inappropriate occasion for his attack.
