This was a very readable historical novel. I hate historical novels, but took my nonfiction-reading husband up on a dare, and bought this one while traveling. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it to anyone looking for something historical that isn't a dry textbook-ish book.

A truely memorable read. It drew me into a world view I had not even known existed. We all know the cannard that history is written from the perspective of the victor, but I had not considered what it must be like to watch history leave you in the dust.
interesting but a little too much detail. not at all what I expected.
My husband (who is a great fan of the Bernard Cornwell Uthred books) found this a struggle -- clearly the author knows his stuff, but there were problems with tone (too cute and modern at times) and structure (long digressions)
