This is more of a character study than a real mystery, but I for one didn't fully anticipate all the twists and turns. It kept me up most of the night because I found the characters and their development compelling and credible. What really made this story was the complexity of the characters and relationships, especially Amy's slow realization of exactly who her grandparents really were. The way various characters changed and grew was believable. I have read all of Maron's novels and this is a worthy addition.

This is NOT Deborah Knott (no pun intended) but it is Margaret Maron, who writes complex characters in intriguing situations. The atmosphere of the South-- North Carolina--is richly drawn.

Imagine a mix of NYC and rural North Carolina. Three murders. A disfunctinal family. Love. Money. A satisfying conclusion.
I loved the characters, the rambling old family home in which so much has happened. I've never read this author before but I certainly will look for other novels by her.
Highly recommended.

It starts with a death of an old woman. Her granddaughter comes to go through her things and has questions not only about this death, but also that of her mothers. A little slow at first, but then it picks up.Another interesting read by this author. This is a non series book.

As good as Margaret Maron's other books. I like this new character. She is very different that Deborah Knott, but they still take place in the Raleigh area, which I love reading about.

Margaret Maron writes engrossing mysteries set in a NC locale. This one has suspense and murder. You can't put it down.

Not up to the standard this author set in her long-running series featuring Judge Knott. New characters and relationships were developed, but the ending was not credible and thus unsatisfying. The "wrong" character was left in NC for a possible future series. I hoped for more.

Publishers Weekly: "A stand-alone gem... Maron has a faultless ear for southern speech, and the book builds to a climax that hits like a red hot bullet blast."

I ordered this thinking it was a Marsha Muller book....duh. Turns out I like this author a lot and will read more. Gotta love PBS!
