Has anyone read this? I just started it and so far it's fast reading but the story isn't really exciting. I'm not sure if I'm going to like it...

I thought it was just OK.  I had also read Carolly Erickson's Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette and didn't find it particularly exciting either.  Maybe I just don't care for her style.

one thing I noticed was a lack of style. The way she writes isn't anything spectacular. it's very  "this happened and then this happened and then I said this and then she said that and then this happened". Not that I'm expecting everyone to write with flowery words and stuff, but I expected more out of this. I'm on chapter 8 and already disappointed.

I have a copy, but haven't yet started to read it. I'm not in much of a hurry because I didn't think Hidden Diary was all that great. Hidden Diary was just an okay book, not a "must read" for me.  If Last Wife isn't all that great either, I'm thinking Erickson should maybe stick with the biographie's. ;-)

well, I finished this. It wasn't totally bad. I've posted it as well.  It's a little boring but it does pick up speed now and then. Overall it was interesting. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

In the minority here. I enjoyed this book as a lighter read than say the non-fiction bios, but I thought The Queen's Confession (fiction in diary format) was much better.

I didn't mind it as much as I did her fictional book on Josephine.  Couldn't finish the Josephine book, but I read through Last Wife pretty quickly.  Still, I don't find her a great novelist.
