Is it just me or has anyone noticed how unusual this is?

I've been a member of FW for about 5 or 6 years and I have never received so many 50% off codes as I have in the last 6 or more months.

FW was bought out by B&N about a year or more ago so I'm wondering if this is the reason.

I've just been concerned that all these recent 50% off codes mean something and that I better use up my micropay money and free book certificates.

I know it's not like a "brick and mortar" store and they have to get rid of inventory but this question has been on my mind for months now!

I've just been concerned that all these recent 50% off codes mean something and that I better use up my micropay money and free book certificates.

They actually had one weekend with 60% off in December.

After the Agency 5/Publisher ebook war that hit when the Apple IBook store came out, Fictionwise took a big hit when the Agency 5 publisher books didn't come back. Most of mine at the time were Agency 5 books. [Hachette, Harper Collins, Simon & Shuster, Penguin, MacMillan] Those books I purchased from those publishers disapeared for a while. I couldn't download them. Since I always download and backup all books I buy, wasn't a problem. They eventually showed back up.

But not for new customers.

The whole ebook industry was turned upside down last April. [Spearheaded by Steve Jobs and Apple and the Ipad release. Which include a full out ban on coupons.] New pricing guidelines set up and contracts renegotiated. Since B&N now ownes Fictionwise, as I understand it, they didn't renegotiated the new contracts on Fictionwise's behalf. So the Agency 5 books no longer are sold there. Which left Fictionwise with the few big publishers left and the Indies.

Since being bought out, the old owners of Fictionwise have been 'kept on' from what I understand, to run it, but can now not speak for the company. So no news from them, interviews, or any articles or other word from them is allowed by B&N.

It's been speculated a lot, that two things are happening. 1) They're trying to get everyone to use up thier micropay as much as possible, so that if they do close out shop there won't be a lot of really pissed off people. or 2) They're trying to keep the site going by drumming up new business in the ebook market by showing huge numbers in selling what is available.

I can go either way, since I'm not sure B&N is really interested in keeping FW up and running. If they want the equipment and web space, they can take it over when they need it for the B&N site. And those who have no micro-pay on stock (like me) don't seem to be getting the coupons in email any more. And I used to get them all the time. Several people have noticed that as soon as their micropay is gone, so are the emails.

On the other hand, I think you can still add to your micro-pay with a bulk order. At least, it still says you can. Haven't bulk ordered in a while. If they were close to going out, I'd figure they'd keep people from building up more credit. But hey, that's me.

Either way, I wouldn't hold on to any micro-pay or coupons or anything else because they could disapear at any moment. So make sure you download and store your own libraries! (Never trust a web site to hold them forever. People have lost a lot of books in the past that way.)

There's no telling what they're looking to do. Maybe they just want to show that selling 1,000 books at $6.00 with a coupon is better than selling 100 books at $12.00. Especially if they can bump up the numbers of good sales at the lower price with a coupon and not worry about running out of stock.

I just wouldn't run up a lot of credit with them, so you won't lose it if things go bad.

Wow, thank you so much for such an extensive reply!

It's just been really buggin' me! I've been a Buywise club member for years.  I have over $30 in micropay and a free book coupon due to gift certificates from my family.

Everytime I get an email coupon, there's always a line that reminds me that I have micropay dollars to use. I wish I could transfer those dollars to my B&N account.

I think I'll get some books while the gettin's good!cheeky

Yeah, I'd use them up. The Agency 5 books aren't coming back, but they do still have some good ones. Rex Stout, Anne McCaffrey and some others if you go digging around.

Also, the Buywise club is now closed, and if you bought a multi-year membership last spring, (when they were really, really pushing it) you can ask for a refund for the unused years, since they're shut down.

I've read where several people who bought multi-year memberships eventually got reimbursed for the years that never happened.. Took a while I think, but they seemed to have gotten them.

I don't have any problems buying from FW now, or using their coupons if there's something I want. I just take it on a case-by-case sale and immediately download what I buy. I wouldn't give up on them, I'd just be more careful with credit.

I never get emails from Fictionwise with coupons.  If it weren't for Jeanette posting them around PBS, I wouldn't know about them.

I don't have any kind of credits or rebate built up with them though.

I always immediately download my ebooks and put them into Calibre.  I also backup everything onto a flash drive but I need to be better about that.  I should start putting them on SD cards since my new ereader will read those.

Yeap, when that 50% code came out that was like the last straw.  I know I'm looking a gift horse in the mouth but you know that saying "beware of greeks bearing gifts".  I just know something is coming soon! cheeky Or maybe I'm just looking for trouble where there isn't any.

Hmmmm.....maybe I also better make sure I always have some micropay dollars so I can keep getting those discount codes!

Lol. Well, don't go losing any credit for me, but I do appreciate the Fictionwise coupon notices! I do miss getting them in the mail.
