I tried to read some of her stuff back earlier in the summer and maybe it was just the books I checked out (library), but I was not impressed at all.  One was so bad I stopped reading after less than 20 pages.

I keep reading and hoping...figure I've already read 15 books...why not a few more.  I certainly don't look forward to them as much.  The last one wasn't quite as bad....and I'm still hoping!

I stopped after Obsidian Butterfly.  It just didn't interest me anymore.  And strangely enough, I was going through old books tonight and discovered this anthology called Cravings which has an Anita Blake short in it - but I'm not even interested enough to reread it! lol  So I just posted it here.

I wish she would kill Anita already (for good) and put the series out of it's misery. I have no respect left for LKH anymore, especially since she completely insulted her long time fans.

If you go to amazon and read the discussions on almost any of her books it will give you a general idea.  I think basically she told people who complained about the direction the series was taking....."tough, if you don't like it, don't read it"...or something to that effect.  While I don't know the entire story....I think she is right.  She is the author, it's her right to do what she wants.  Kind of like a TV show, change the station....with a book, easier yet, stop buying and stop reading.  At this point I haven't decided to hang it up completely, but I haven't purchased the last couple, I've gotten them from the library.  And hopefully this last book is a sign she is slowly bringing the series back to center.  Funny part is I remember in the first couple books praying she would just get it over with and have sex with someone...now I pray she limits her sex to just one or two!  Careful what you wish for I guess!

Thing I don't get is how vocal the anti-Laurell folks are.... try posting on one of those amazon discussions about her and see what I mean!

Marie it was more along the lines of calling her long time fans whiney. She did a lot of that on her own blog.

I agree with whoever said the last one did improve a bit, it actually had a plot! She called the people that were complaining (includes me) negative readers. She just won't accept that her series is going downhill, and she insisted she wouldn't change a thing, but she did, even if she won't admit it. There was a lot less sex in the last book. Also, I would like to know why her books are getting so darn short! They are getting thinner and thinner every time I buy them, I don't know if it is her publisher or she is just busy doing some of the stuff Anita does in her everyday life lol

The last book did have a plot, woohoo!  There may be a bit of hope.  As for what she did to her fans, woo, they even had to shut her blog down "for reconstruction" for a time because it was like a rapid dog foaming at the mouth over there.  While I'm one of the fans that thinks the books have gone downhill LKH does have a point.  She sells more and more every year so she must be doing something that someone likes.  The problem is that she just abandoned and belittled the fans that put her where she is today.  She wouldn't be there if those of us who started reading her in the beginning hadn't started recommending those books like crazy.  I know I pushed them off on anyone I knew because I loved them so much.  I used to buy her books as soon as they hit the shelf, as in I had been known to call in to school/work to be there the moment they hit the shelf.  Now I trade for them or buy them used.  I really don't appreciate how she responded to the fans, sure the fans said some visious things but she should have been the professional about it.  so I won't add any money to her pocketbook if I can help it.  LOL

Actually Haley the fans started out wanting the old Anita back and at times pleading to get her. Then LKH went all crazy on em and then it turned ugly.

Chris...I kind of have to agree w/ LKH...many of the former fans are whiners and a bit stalkerish...like I said before, take a look at the boards on amazon.  It a handful of people who continually dominated any thread that has to do w/ a LKH book...get over it, find a new author.  Life is too short...I really don't get it.  When I discovered LKH, she had about 8 of the books out...and I liked all of them.  Some better than others...but as the series continued I agree, that in my opinion, the series took a downward slide....but  I didn't post on LKH board and bash her...or stalk amazon threads, I started to read something else!

actually Chris, I know that the fans started it by asking her what was going on, I watched it happen.  It was like a train wreck you couldn't avoid.

Just saying it started out small and she was the one who blew it up out of preportions.

It might be LKH who is writing these books, but the fans are the ones buying them, and telling others about them. We also invest time and money into these. When you love a series so passionately, it's hard to accept and to handle the fact that the series now sucks. Fans have every right to ask her whats going on etc. She has no right to insult us and basically tell us we mean nothing to her and we should go away. Without us she would be nothing, her books have been out for a loooooooong time (since 1993 to be exact) and it wasn't until the past few years that she got so popular. Who does she think helped her be that way? You don't just go and completely change a character like that and then get bitchy when questioned on it. The Anita from the first book would want to kill the new Anita. That is not some minor plot change,   and especially to those of us who were so involved in the books, we wasted years watching anita becoming the gutter slut she is. I believe she (lkh) is in denial about how much and how badly her books have changed. Sure she has the right to write what she wants and do what she wants to her characters, but we also have every right to want to know what the hell is going on. She has a job that depends on her readers, and she needs to remember that. I believe she sells more now because the genre is so popular, and people who pick up her books now aren't as invested as people who have been reading them for 15 years.

But the point is her books sell...she doesn't have to answer to anyone but herself.  Don't get me wrong, I don't like the direction the series has taken either, but she is the author and can do as she pleases, bottom line.  I wouldn't dream of telling an artist how to paint and I have no right to tell an author how to write.  If she does it the risk of losing fans so be it, it her right to take that risk.

And it is our right to voice our opinions about the books and about the way she is acting towards fans.

I remember Anne Rice did the same thing, and regretted it. She went into a tirade on Amazon about readers saying she ruined her vampire series. She offered to repay anyone who wanted their money back and did pay them, I was shocked! I still buy every LKH book, but more out of habit, and I hate paying the hardback prices but I buy them from the SciFi bookclub to fulfull my 4 book committment, they are pretty cheap there. I don't hang out at her message board much so I missed all the action but heard about it later. What she said did offend me since I have been a fan since book 1 and recommended them over and over to other readers, and I have stuck around even through the crap books. Hopefully next time she will step back and handle those kind of comments with more tact and professionalism even though it is our choice to buy the books. As for selling more books, I can not see how this is possible since I have gone from standing in a line waiting for the release to seeing stacks and stacks sitting on sale everywhere!

But try to see it from her point of view.........and trust me I agree that the books have basically become porn (bad porn at that)...I AGREE there were some books that sucked!  But...don't you think that these are her "works"...and her babies.......and she defends them on that type of emotional level?  Again.....I hate the direction the series took, but it's not personal for me.  I just stop reading.  To her it is personal.  It's like insulting someone's kid......you just dont' do it.  You roll your eyes and walk away.

Edited to add...you are right, it is your right to express your opinion, no one said you didn't....but for those that stalk website, and discussions boards?  Yeez get a life.  Stop reading...it isn't too hard.  And again if she loses fans and her books stop selling great...but that's not what's happening.

BJ I can see how you would question her sales based on how many are in the stores.  but the sales figures show that she is a bestseller.

I thought the Anita series was one of the best things out there until it turned into just mindless porn (my opinion). I bought the first 5-6 books of the series, then turned to simply checking the later ones out of the library to see if they were worth reading, but since it was going downhill, I just quit all together. I read a few threads out there (like this one!) to see if I was the only one totally turned off. I think her other series - Meredith Gentry? - is just as bad. I did see that she said that she would be bringing Anita back on track - I'm hopeful from this thread that maybe it's getting better. So, if you were someone who loved the first 5-6 books, but hated the 7+ ones - is this last one worth a read (maybe just checking out from library) or should I wait for the next and see if continues to get closer to the original?

The last one was definately better.  But I also lasted past book 5-6 before I thought it got really bad, so maybe we are not of the same mind set....and you really didn't get to the terrible books!  lol!  If  you stopped reading the series...I definately don't think this book would be a call back...I suggest not reading it and take a wait and see approach.  For those of us that continue to read hoping for more, it was a good sign..but nothing more than that IMHO.
