This book is the 3rd of a set of three about 3 friends who swear to support each other and never get married. 7 years later, two of the three have married and the third gets her romance. After reading this book, I don't feel like I need to read the first two. It makes good beach reading but not what I would call compelling. It seemed a little more unrealistic than many romance books, but still worth reading.

A very charming book about a lovely young girl unwittingly captured by a very unusual pirate, who is also a physician and an artist. Great plot.

This was my first Jane Feather book. So I haven't read the two prior to this one but every time Phoebe's story was mentioned I cringed because it all sounded very dirty (marrying your dead sister's husband who is also your best friend's father; talk about double yuck factor). But this was Olivia's story, the scholar. Her father worked for Parliament while her love interest, Anthony, was a pirate working to free the King against Parliament.

I enjoyed the book but I found parts of it a little boring. There was a lot of political plays and stuff. I kind of wished the story would hurry along. I thought too many of Anthony and Olivia's interludes ended poorly and it made me a little less excited to read about the next time they might meet up.

Anthony was nothing special. He was a fun character but there was something missing to make him sexy. Maybe because he was such a chameleon that I couldn't get a fix on the real Anthony, so he seemed quite abstract to me. The more interesting characters were actually Adam and Ellen (the people who saved and raised Anthony).

Olivia was a little frustrating because she didn't speak up very often when she had doubts. So in dealing with her first real adult relationship she had to overcome childhood molestation and all her fears about Anthony being a bad guy. Add that Anthony is working directly against her father too as mentioned above. It was a litte too much. There were just too many strikes against a relationship. And even though she was supposed to be a scholar, the role wasn't really significant to her character. For all that matter, she could have wanted to be a seamstress and the story would have been the same.

But it was entertaining and has pigued my interest enough to read more by Feather. I don't think I would really spend credits on her at this point. I still haven't decided if she would be a worthwhile writer.
