I looked out the door and saw Sara walking slowly toward my house. As she came closer, I could see she was crying. "What's wrong, Sara?" I asked. It was all that talk about romance," Sara said. "If we hadn't come to the picnic, it never would have happened!" "What wouldn't have happened?" I asked. "Katie, last night Ernie Kennedy asked my mother to marry him!" Sara had been worrying all summer about the growing romance between her mother and the man she'd met at the restaurant where she was a waitress. Katie wasn't sure just why Sara was so upset, but Sara was her best friend, so she tried to comfort her.
