For 2014, we will again have a science fiction reading challenge on this forum, similar to last year's.  Now is the time to select four main topics, each of which will eventually have ten categories each - for a total of 40 categories.  There will be options for reading less (or more) than the 40.

From a high level, the selection process works like this:

  • Step 1 - Select 4 broad topics within Science Fiction
  • Step 2 - Select 10 categories within each broad topic
  • Step 3 - Each participant creates a personal tracking post on the shared tracking thread
  • Step 4 - Read books to fill categories

This thread is for purposes of Step 1.

The six broad topics that are being voted on are four from last year (we can change the specific categoies within those if they are selected), and two more that have come up during recent discussions on this forum.

  • SUBGENRE
  • AWARDS
  • AUTHORS
  • FIRSTS
  • LOST AND FOUND
  • THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Each participant can cast up to three votes in a reply to this post.  You can come back and edit your vote at any time up until the polls close and the votes are counted.  The voting starts right now, and the polls are open as long as the words "VOTE NOW" appear in the headline of this thread (at least three days). Then I'll close the polls and start a new thread for Step 2.

Voting does not commit you to participating in the challenge, but we all hope that by 1/1/14 your interest will be ramped up!

I would like to vote for:

Authors

Awards

Subgenre  Lost and Found

Settings (which could include the solar system)

Having thought the matter over some more, I am changing my vote for subgenre to Lost and Found.

Each participant can cast up to four votes.

I'll count THE SOLAR SYSTEM and SETTINGS together as one candidate topic.  If it wins, it goes whichever way was voted more often.

I've sent a reminder PM to our 2013 participants who have not voted yet.  Polls will close Tuesday at noon central time.

Well, there were a total of seven voters, and the topics received votes as follows

  1. Lost And Found, 6 votes
  2. Settings/Solar System, 6 votes
  3. Authors, 5 votes
  4. Awards, 4 votes
  5. Firsts, 4 votes
  6. Subgenre, 3 votes

Since we will have four topics, I will resolve the tie between Awards and Firsts by removing my own vote.  The winner is Firsts.

And since the split between Settings and Solar System was 3 and 3, I will resolve that by removing my own vote as well.  The winner is Settings.

The four topics (of ten categories each) in the 2014 SF Challenge will be

  • Authors
  • Firsts
  • Lost and Found
  • Settings

I will launch a new thread for discussion, revision, and possibly voting on categories, once I pull together some seed categories in each topic.
