Way to go, Vanessa.  I voted for several and didn't vote for some that I know are classics but I haven't read.  Perhaps this will encourage me to read them.

Nice list. I voted for some of your picks. Most of them I haven't read though.

You encouraged me to make my own book list. It's not a list of classics, though.

I hope this list "goes international", that is, more so than it has done already, with the inclusion of Homer, Ovid, Dumas, Dostoyevsky, and Kafka.  For instance, Italian literature (now represented by Dante, alone) could include The Betrothed, by Alessandro Manzoni; The Leopard, by Giuseppe di Lampedusa; Bread and Wine, by Ignazio Silone; and Two Women, by Alberto Moravia.  I haven' yet read Humberto Eco, so I don't know about his literary standing.
