If Hanna has more trust than faith, it's not on account of her husband, Darwin Charles - a man as turned around as his name - who is on the verge, it seems, of another affair. With a rapidly devolving marriage, four children with four sets of problems, a pet snake named Either, a dog called Under and a missionary mother who occasionaly forgets she isnt back in Ecuador, Hannah charles is on the verge of something herself, although she doesnt know exactly what.
Always lingering in Hannah's memory is her mythic childhood as the daughter of missionary parents in the South American rain forest, and Nimu, the older tribal woman who cared for her and taught her the magic of the palpable world. It is Nimu's gift that stays with Hannah as she struggles to raise her children and cope with a husband seeking his own salvation, his Sixties radicalism long eclipsed.
