How could Harry Potter be better? Forget that wizard nonsense, let's have a series about how Greek mythology is real! There are kids who have one parent who is a Greek god, and they all need special training to defend themselves against the mythological monsters. Almost every child I've recommended this to has come right back for the sequel. As an adult reader who likes some children's fantasy writing but not all, I think this and the Peter and the Starcatcher books are the best I've come across in the last few years.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the idea of the Greek gods being real. If you like mythology I think you'll like this book. Sure it's a children's book but I bought it for myself!

Very clever! I haven't read anything this entertaining about Greek mythology in a very long time - if ever. The characters are well-detailed and interesting, and the action is fresh and flowing.

Love it! I cannot say enough about this series! It is witty, exciting, and makes you look back into your mythology books to make sure you "got it" all. This first book starts the series off strong, and it only gets better as each book comes out!

I'm nowhere close to the intended audience, but I read this book out of curiosity, wanting to understand why this series is so enduringly popular. What I found was a story, in this first book at least, that's lighter than Harry Potter, very American, with plenty of (often goofy) humor and well-drawn characters that kids can probably relate to. It's also a painless dose of irreverent info about some of the classical gods. The writing is not bad, but the plot, with its repetitive cycling of meet a bad guy, vanquish, repeat, grew tiresome and predictable. I won't continue with the series, but at least I now get, at least a little, its appeal.

Oh my goodness...this is one of the books that contributed to my mythology obsession. After reading it, I could not help but wish that I was a half-blood at the camp, too. Thank you, Rick Riordan!
