Good book for older elementary school age. Takes place during WWII and many of the problems will be very recognizable to American children now facing problems caused by war in another country.

I was a little disappointed to find this a rather bland story and one that lacked direction, especially since it was a Newbery Honor. It felt simply like a collage of scenes pasted together of a young motherless American girl's summer during World War II, when her father is called to the war effort and she is left with a grandmother she does not get along with. She befriends her neighbor's nephew, a refugee from Hungary, who is determined to get his young sister back from France where he was forced to leave her behind when she became ill during their escape. While it showed an interesting point of view of the war, both the story and characters lacked substance to me.
