I received two books yesterday.  Guess which person is giving me a hassle about returning my credit...?

Book 1: Killer Stuff (4 photos) - stained on bottom and outer edges of book.  Stainage seeps into pages.

(link removed because the general public reads the forums now)

Book 2: Expecting Adam (2 photos) - slight water damage.  The pages are stained and slightly wrinkled - the texture is "grainy" where the water affected the pages.

(link removed because the general public reads the forums now)

"Oh come on, those are TOTALLY readable, it's a free used book site, you know!!"

I haven't had my coffee yet, so the best I have is phooey on your wet books!

It wasn't like that when he/she posted it, so the mailman must have been drinking coffee while he was delivering the mail.

LOL

Sorry you got more bum books, L.  :(

Oh, according to the first person, the "slight staining" isn't liquid damage, I obviously want NEW books, I am wanting to resell the book...oh, and she wants me to send the book back and THEN she'll refund two credits for it.

To say I am infuriated is an understatement.  This is why I HATE having to ask for a credit back!!!

Don't blame the mailman, I bet L does this to the books herself just to get the free credits!

edit: I love when they want to change how everything works.  I'd be half tempted to find one of their wish list books and send them one that matches, see how they like it.

LOL - ok James, you made me giggle.  Thanks.

You took the wind out of my sails. :)

ETA: What's so ironic is that  the sender of the second book was completely apologetic and gracious about refunding the credit.  I normally wouldn't have reported the book she sent as it's so minor, but I am sick of having to eat credits.

L - You have THE WORST luck with this, don't you?  I can't believe how many people send you water damaged books...and if I'm not mistaken you even have an RC addressing this very point.

LOL..yes I do - on both points.  I don't know what it is.  I am a liquid-damaged-book-magnet.  I put it in my RCs so I wouldn't get books that are liquid damaged (believe it or not I get less now than I used to!)  I started photographing them as proof because it's so ridiculous.  I have had 3 in 3 weeks!

I request a lot of HCs, many of which are a bit old - maybe that's the problem, though probably half of the liquid damaged books I get are PB, IIRC.  I honestly don't know why it happens.

You ARE the liquid damage magnet right now.  That latest book was just "EWWW... that GWOSS" as J would say.  Continue to fight the good fight.... you are helping weed out the shady book posters.

Someone just offered me an awesome WL book about a plague (which I collect) so remember -  for every stinky cigarette butt in the PBS punchbowl, there are some true gems, LOL! :D

Gross...gross...gross...WTH is on that first book?  I guess we really don't want to know!

The fact that people actually wrap these up an mail them boggles the mind.

Definitely icky!  I just can't understand a person wanting a credit so bad that they would actually mail books that look like that :(

Oh, according to her, there's nothing wrong with that book.  It's - and I quote -  "in perfect condition except for those very minute stains..."

It's all my fault, you see - I want to sell it, I only want "new" books, I don't count because I don't list books to trade and only buy books with credits,  I'm a "tyrant", Why is a credit such a big deal to me if I have received over 600 books?...oh, and let's see....what else...I'm a bad mother because I don't want to disrupt my day and drag my kid out in 90 degree weather to go to the post office to mail HER book back to her without receiving 2 credits back first, despite the fact that gas here is $3.90/gal.

I told her not to contact me any further.

I think they must be mis-reading your RC's.

They probably read them as "Please send me your water damaged and stained books, I have so many credits that I just can't wait to receive a book in unpostable condition.  Thanks in advance for sending me your CRAP!!!"

Just wondering... is there a way to send these pictures to someone in authority at PBS so they can deal with the offender?  Someone like this, who OBVIOUSLY could give a crap less if they send you a damaged book will probably just keep continuing to do this to other people.

Every time I have had to ask for a credit back I have always been afraid that I am going to end up having to deal with someone like this. So far everything has gone smoothly and politely, but I still have that fear that things will go wrong. I think its some form of PTSD left over from the few times I have sold things on Ebay.

Jennifer, I sent it in with a link to the photos.  Not sure if anything will happen or not.

L, I just got a book today that must have meant for you! If I could find my camera, I would post pictures. I knew the book might be yellowed since the copyright is 1972 BUT I wasn't expecting the obvious water stain on the page that has the ISBN. Also, the large amount of underlining and other notations throughout the book.

Do you send the pictures to the person when you request your credit refund?

Pat, I always offer to send pictures - that way there can be no denial of the damage.  In two of the three most recent cases, the people knew there was damage and sent the book anyway.

I think everyone should photograph the unpostabe books they receive. I also think there should be a sticky thread at the top of this forum for posting links to pics of unpostable books.  I know most of the people in the forums understand, but it might be of help to someone who is new or those who don't understand what "liquid damage" or "cleaved spine" is, etc.

I think a post like that would be great. I personally am not sure what a cleaved spine looks like.
