It appears that when you list books by author only those currently available for ordering or sale from Amazon.com are showing up. I've used this to wishlist books but if they don't show up until posted, doesn't that defeat Wish Listing's purpose? Is this a new policy at PBS? (I have a number of old, out of print books on my bookshelf that aren't yet available but don't show up on the author's list; possibly because none is for sale through Amazon.com?)

Are these books you posted yourself using the Post Without An ISBN option?  If so them make sure the author matched the other listings exactly.  Leaving off a middle initial, reversing the order or being off by 1 letter  can make them not come up under the author's name.  Also if a book is WL under a newer full ISBN version, you can tag that one with the "1 posted under XXXX" with the ISBN PBS gave your book.

(PS.  I lived on Whidbey Island for 9 yrs and loved it)

When you see the icon that says "Order From Paperback Swap", that means you are ordering from a member NOT that you are ordering new from the site.  I've seen several people confused with this.  Hover over the icon and it will tell you, "Request this book from a member of PBS".    Hope this helps.

If you just posted the books recently, it can take a few days for the data base to place them on the correct author list -- and as Mary said, the author name has to match exactly.

Also, if you search for a book and find one that you yourself have on your bookshelf, there will be no "order from PBS" button.  It's to avoid allowing us to order a book from ourselves.  (One friend ordered a book, printed the wrapper, mailed it, and gave herself a dope slap as she received it in the mail the next day.  She had been mailing out a bunch of books, and didn't notice her own name and address on one of the wrappers.)

Boks that were previously coming up on author's lists are no longer there, and the only difference I can see is that they are not avaiolable for sale in Amazon. At least two are ones I received through PBS so they were in the data base previously. Makes me think Amazon's involvement is the cause.

Do these books have ISBNs?

Can you give the examples? Also are you searching Posted Books or Wish List Books only?  A book with no copies posted but no wishers wouldn't show up on either of those lists.  But it should show up on All Books whether Amazon has it for sale or not.

A book can definitely be in the database here and not be on the author's page when you go to that page from somewhere else. This has nothing to do with whether or not Amazon has it for sale. The book will always be on the version of the author's page that appears when you click on the author's name on the exact listing (i.e. go to your Transaction Archive, locate the transaction where you got the book, click on the author's name there).

The reasons for this behavior are that publishers and authors use a variety of name formats, and it's just very hard for computers to make some kinds of matches reliably. For example, look at:

and

It's pretty obvious to you and me that the first group of links are all for the same author, but the last link is not the same person. That's awfully hard for a computer to figure out based on the data it has available in the database here.

Three books that I'm sure previously showed up in an authors list but don't now are: (Note: I am talking about the author list, not in the general search where you get many more results because it returns any possible matches)

"Bright to the Wanderer": by Bruce Lancaster (I have the 1942 Little Brown hardback on my bookshelf but it doesn't show up in the author's list.)

"The Kahuna Killer" by Juanita Sheridan - the more recently published version from Rue Morgue Press shows up but the 1951 Collier version doesn't, even though I received it through the site and sent it back out.

"Four Lost ladies"  by Stuart Palmer - 1949 hardback.

Yes, I know these are all old without ISBNs but they used to show up on the author's list. At least they show up on the general search page, although I generally don't use that for authors since it isn't as concise.

In any case, no big deal, just thought it was another incident where large companies are controlling what we see online.

Probably the reason they don't show up now is that someone had posted them before, without an ISBN--so PBS assigns a short 5-number ISBN that is unique to that one copy. Even if the details of the book you have--edition, publisher, size, weight, etc. are identical, the book won't show up again once that transaction is done with until it's entered again.

I have noticed some inconsistant behavior of the book listings on the "new" authors pages. I have been reporting them as I see them. They have fixed some.

Note: I am not reporting issues with book listings... only issues that seem to be in the programming for the site.
