I just wanted to let all of you know about a fantastic new book - Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. I stumbled across this book online (you can read it for free on the author's website) and absolutely loved it! It's a YA novel, but I found it a fast paced thriller. Very suspenseful and exciting. Also very enlightening, with lots of information about advances in technology and where we're headed as a country. I've been reccomending it to everyone! Even some people I don't know! Here's a description:

Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.

But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.

When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

I loved this book! Dystopian books (this one isn't exactly dystopian, I know, but it shows the world headed in a scary direction), and books set in the near future, tend to appeal to me, and the writing style was very immediate; it moved the story along and kept it interesting. A lot of times, books with teenage rebel-type characters annoy me, but this is one book that got it right - the main character was multifaceted and insecure and real, and he made mistakes, and he was realistically vulnerable. I would definitely recommend this one.

I just wanted to add that I went to hear Cory Doctorow speak last night and it was great! He's a fantastic public speaker and took the time to talk to everyone who wanted to have a book signed. He announced that he has a few more YA novels in the works and a book of comics coming out in about 2 weeks. I strongly encourage everyone to check him out!
