If a television show can be important, historically-speaking, they don't get any more important than Saturday Night Live. There are a lot of good anecdotes contained herein. If you ever loved this show, you'll enjoy reading this book.

This book breaks the SNL Dynasty into six logical time-based groupings and uses quotes from cast, staff, guests and crew to reveal insights that fans of the show will appreciate.

There is an entire chapter dedicated to the genius that is Lorne Michaels. I've always found it funny that the man who virtually owns the comedy genre gives off the impression of such an authoritarian straight guy.

The book is thorough in its 565-page coverage, but made easily digestible by the quote format. There is also an appendix listing every cast member by season.

Flashback to the past! Enjoyed the quotes from the SNL folks. Some quotes were great because they were full of juicy gossip or because they give the reader insight into the personalities of the person providing the quote (for example, Harry Shearer may be a swell guy, but his quotes make him appear a little conceited and whiny). On the other hand, I wanted more quotes than they provided.

If you've lived through the SNL peaks and valleys then this book won't offer much in the way of surprises. But, it does offer a great account of the fact as told in the words of many key players that were there. The only thing that would have made it more appealing would have been to have those quoted deliver their quotes themselves.

Good "read".

Too much anecdote, not enough narrative for me.

It reads like stereo instructions.

They jump back and forth from person to person. Each titled with the person who said it and then about a paragraph worth of information. I found it choppy and hard to read. Since I came later to SNL reading about the very early years was not all eye opening for me.

I wanted to love this, since I am a child of the era, but all of the interviews were read by someone other than the person being quoted...brand new in the box. It's yours!
