Soon to be a movie
Good book - well written. 1920's 1930's gangster plot. Enjoyed the main characters - even tho they were mobsters. Set in Prohabition era, but a different take than Bugsy Malone or the G-men. Friendships, enemies, the KKK, lasting love, money, bootleg liquior, families, rivals and revenge...this book has it all. I was surprised by the ending, but it fit the story. 4 stars
I have read most of Lehane's novels. His treatment of the second book of the Coughlin family series is a departure from most of his Boston-set novels. It starts in Boston but winds up in FL and Cuba. It is one of his best writings -- full of surprises, wonderful turns of phrase, and penetrating insights. You won't regret reading it.
