I was hoping this would be more engrossing than it was, but it fell flat. The journey is simply boring and none of the characters are interesting enough to care about. There are only a handful of images that stand out, but the majority of the book is forgettable. I would not recommend this particular Dillard book.

Historically, there were four linked communities on Bellingham Bay-Whatcom,Old Bellingham,Sehome, and Fairhaven, which incorporated with each other in various combinations throughout the second half of the nineteeth century. It was not until the events in this story had long passed-not until 1904-that they consolidated to form the city of Bellingham.Whatcom was the first settlement, and had the lumber mill,Sehome had the coal mine.Fairhaven expected the Great Northern Terminus, and it saw the most dramatic boom.Jim Hill actually decided where to locate his Great Northern Railway terminus two years before the 93 panic.

She is a fine writer. Descriptions are thorough, I felt I was "there". Sometimes, almost a "clinical" review of the situations
