Excellent mystery with a little bit of romance thrown in.

The main character is great: a high-priced female lawyer with a family secret.

Nice plot twists too!

Look Closely is an action-packed thriller of surprising emotional depth. I ordered this book from a PBS member and when I started reading it I could not put it down. It is a thriller without the blood and guts. A very good story. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Attorney Hailey Sutter has lost contact with her brother and sister after the death of their mother when she was 7. Suddenly, she seeks the truth to her mother's death when she receives a letter that says, "There is no statute of limitations on murder. Look closely". So she begins to unravel the truth and things get weird. I suspected the ending about half way through, but there were some surprise elements. One of the surprise elements really annoyed me. The person that sent her the letter has really strange motives and has been keeping track of her in a most unconventional manner that I just didn't like. Overall, though, it was fascinating and kept me reading at a very fast pace in anticipation of the end.

I liked this book a lot, even though I had a good idea how the "who done it" part would turn out. There were enough other surprises to keep my interest. Interesting main character, good plot and a very nice writing style. I'll keep an eye out for other Caldwell books in the future.

Manhattan attorney Hailey Sutter is headed to Chicago to represent the McKnight Corporation, whose Internet company has been accused of Web technology theft, when she receives a note saying, "There is no statute of limitations on murder. Look closely."

The ominous statement catapults Hailey back to Woodland Dunes (a small seaside town on Lake Michigan), where her mother died from a head injury when Hailey was seven. Shortly afterward, her older brother and sister disappeared, and she was left in the care of her father, who refuses to discuss the incident.

Between the McKnight arbitrations, Hailey flies from Manhattan to Chicago to Portland in search of her estranged siblings and answers that she hopes will shed some light on her mother's mysterious death. The smooth first-person narrative builds suspense and paints a fine picture of time and place.

With three previous regular chick lit novels under her belt, Laura Caldwell's latest book "Look Closely" is a suspense/mystery chick lit novel - one that I found hard to put down.

It all begins when New York City Attorney Hailey Sutter receives an anonymous letter one day that simply reads: "There is no statute of limitations on murder. Look closely". Immediately Hailey knows that the note has something to do with her mother's death, which happened over twenty years ago but has always been shrouded in mystery and silence. As a matter of fact, she has been estranged from her sister and brother her entire adult life, and her father, who practices for the same law firm as Hailey, always closes up whenever the subject is brought up.

Hailey decides to once and for all solve the mystery of what really happened to her mother. The only problem is, she has no memory of the night, although she was supposedly present. And nobody's talking. So she hops on a plane and returns to the small coastal town she lived in, and begins digging deeper. And slowly, she begins uncovering details she had previously known little about. She also suddenly starts having flashbacks of the night her mother died. I loved this book! It was a page-turner of a novel that I got into immediately. Caldwell has a way of drawing the reader in within the first chapter, and this book is no exception. This book has tons of suspense, mystery, a dash of subtle romance.
