Published in maybe mid-to-late 1970's, about a rebellious youg kid who gets sent to a reform school out in the middle of a huge bare plain - he befreinds a huge robot who (I think) was built for warfare ; there a scene where the robot is displayed at a public rally and trashes cars - the kid feels the robot is oppressed like he is and tries to "adopt" it, both trying to escape
Very evocative title like "Ogre" or "Giant" or some such, which was also the name of the robot
Possibly set in either Britain or Scotland
Any help identifying this book appreciated! :)
Sounds like Iron Giant. Ted Hughes short story. From 1968. Been reprinted and made into a movie.
There is also The Iron Man and The Iron Woman.

No, the one I'm thinking of is a longer book, definitely for Young Adults, with a much darker and (if I recall) more cynical view point -- I know and love The Iron Giant; that's one of my favorite books (though I've never seen the movie!) but that's not the book I was looking for. Appreciate the response though! :)
The title MIGHT have been "Goliath"... that popped into my head this morning for some reason.
