ok here is the story.I know this a long shot. and like i said i did not know where else  to post this since i have posted in other rooms and no luck.i thought that if i posted here i might reach more people.

i read this book way back in 1995 or 96 as a teenager. it was an old book even then. At the time i was reading a lot of historical fiction. books along the lines of mammoth hunters. this book took place in ancient europe. if i remember correctly it may have been in the brittish isles. anyway it was about this group of  people who worshiped in places like stonehenge. it was a group of short stories telling the evelution of the tribe from going from slightly nomadic to the end of the tribe. in the first story a young woman was being taught how to be a healer. she mated with a man at the night of the spring equanox (the only night they were allowed to mate). her story ended in the race of people being allowed to mate whenever. the last story ended with a woman who talkes a man from another tribe. there is a famine. her man saves her life by finding out that snails are edible. (i remember that part quite clearly because i thought it was very disgusting) at the end of the book that man dies trying to rescue a woman from being sacraficed to the gods to end the rains and the famine. this went against the core of thier beliefs. so the tribe broke apart then. the other thing that stands out was the epilouge. It describes ths race of people that lives underground because of thier guilt. the author wrote that this race of people could be what we call lepercons, elves, gnomes and other small people.

if this rings a bell with you please let me know. i have been looking for the book for a while. but not knowing the author or title that is being a bit difficult.

thanks for putting up with me. have a good day.  --        Becky

Gah! I love a good Google challenge, but I haven't had much luck yet. Off to bed, but I might try to help out tomorrow if someone hasn't come to the rescue by then. :) If you find out what it is, please update the post - sounds like a good read!

eta: It's not Sarum: The Novel of England by Edward Rutherford, is it?

The People of the Earth books by Gear?  There were several in the series, although I believe they were set in North America. Good luck!

it is not Sarum, kelly.i thought it was too. i even requested it in hopes that was the book. this book ended with the people going to live underground to pay for killing a person. human life was sacred. the book was an old beat up copy when i found it.(like i said i was 18 at the time in 1997)i think it was in a box of books my aunt sent to my grandfather. i have no idea why i picked it up. i have been looking at yard sales, liberaries, second hand stores, and on here for months. this was my last shot at uncovering it.
