Maybe these are called biblical fiction? I have no idea. I just love the modern retelling of biblical or epic stories. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Rachel and Leah: Women of Genesis
Author: Orson Scott Card

is just one of a series from this author.  All are very good.   Card is known for his Science Fiction/Fantasy I believe but these books are very Bibical and written so well.

There is also:

Sarah: Women of Genesis by Orson Scott Card and Rebekah (Women of Genesis) by Orson Scott Card

Have you read the books by Marek Halter?  I've read the first two of Canaan Trilogy and they were really good.  They are Sarah and Zipporah.

Also good was Mary Called Magdalene by Margaret George

Try Francine River's Mark of the Lion trilogy.

The books are A Voice in the Wind, An Echo in the Darkness and As Sure as the Dawn.  They are absolutely wonderful.

Try the Earth Children series by Jean M. Auel.  (Clan of the Cave Bear, etc.)   The names of the books made me seriously doubt that I would like them, but they are really good.  I actually read them twice which is something I very rarely do.

Biblical fiction is one of my favorite genres and it all started with The Red Tent.

Mary Called Magdalene is excellent.

The Gilded Chamber by Rebecca Kohn is the story of Queen Esther and has been compared to The Red Tent.  She also wrote another one about the exodus called Seven Days to the Sea.  None of her books are actually available right now but they are on my wishlist.

I recently finished The Garden of Ruth by Eva Etzioni-Halevy, which was enjoyable if you like biblical fiction but no where near The Red Tent.

Ruth by Lois Henderson

How Far to Bethlehem by Norah Lofts - great story of time leading up to the birth of Jesus from Mary's point of view

Two From Galilee and Three From Galilee by Marjorie Holmes (about Mary & Joseph & Jesus as a family)

A Dragon, a Dreamer, and the Promise Giver by Joyce Strong (King Solomon)
